The now classical idea that programmed cell death contributes to a plethora of developmental processes still has lost nothing of its impact. It is, therefore, important to establish effective three-dimensional reconstruction as well as simulation techniques to decipher the exact patterns and functions of such apoptotic events. The present study focuses on the question whether and how apoptosis promotes neurulation-associated processes in the spinal cord of Tupaia belangeri. Our 3D reconstructions demonstrate that at least two craniocaudal waves of apoptosis consecutively (...) pass through the dorsal spinal cord. The first wave appears to be involved in neural fold fusion and/or in selection processes among premigratory neural crest cells. The second one seems to assist in establishing the dorsal signaling center known as the roof plate. In the hindbrain, in contrast, apoptosis among premigratory neural crest cells progresses craniocaudally but discontinuously, in a segment-specific manner. Unlike apoptosis in the spinal cord, these segment-specific apoptotic events, however, precede later ones that seemingly support neural fold fusion and/or postfusion remodeling. Arguing with Whitehead that biological patterns and rhythms differ in that biological rhythms depend “upon the differences involved in each exhibition of the pattern” we show that 3D reconstruction and simulation techniques can contribute to distinguish between patterns and rhythms of apoptosis. By deciphering novel patterns and rhythms of developmental apoptosis, our reconstructions help to reconcile seemingly inconsistent earlier findings in chick and mouse embryos, and to create rules for computer simulations. In dieser Studie wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die bei der Klassifikation von Musik zur Anwendung gelangenden Kriterien und ihre Interdependenzen systematisch zu erfassen und zu beschreiben. Als Quellen dienen dabei Typologien der Musik aus der Zeit vom sechsten (Boethius) bis zum neunzehnten Jahrhundert (A.B. Marx und Ferdinand Hand) sowie die bisherigen musikwissenschaftliche Ansatze einer Gattungstheorie. Unter Einbeziehung von Erkenntnissen aus der Literaturwissenschaft werden insgesamt acht Grundkriterien der Klassifikation erlautert. Mit ihrer Hilfe lassen sich die vorliegenden Definitionen und Typologien vergleichend (...) analysieren und in Beziehung zueinander setzen. AbschlieBend geht die Studie der Frage nach, ob der Gattungsbegriff in der zeitgenossischen Kunstmusik tatsachlich - wie von einigen Autoren postuliert - obsolet geworden ist. This study tries, for the first time, exhaustively to collect and describe the criteria used to classify music and to consider the interrelationship between these criteria in a systematic way. Typologies of music from the sixth century (Boethius) to the nineteenth (A.B. Marx and Ferdinand Hand) serve as sources for this study, as well as musicological writings on genre theory. Partly by exploiting the findings of literary criticism, eight basic criteria of classification are developed. They allow a comparative analysis of all existing musical definitions and typologies. Finally, the study discusses whether or not genres have become obsolete in contemporary art music (as some scholars have proclaimed). The answer is negative: genres today are perhaps more important in supporting an adequate reception of contemporary art music than at any other time in history. Wolfgang Marx was born in 1967 in Bremen. He studied Historical and Systematic Musicology and Philosophy at Hamburg University where he took the Dr phil in 2002. He was Product Manager for Berlin Classics in 1998 and Catalogue Manager of an internet music retailer in Hamburg in 2000. Since 2002, he has held a permanent Lectureship in Musicology at University College Dublin. Von den einen als Chaot oder Voodoo-Priester der Erkenntnistheorie gescholten, sehen andere in ihm den anregenden Provokateur, genialen Wissenschaftstheoretiker und überzeugten Anhänger des wissenschaftlichen Pluralismus und demokratischen Relativismus. Schlagwort,,anything goes" wollte Feyerabend kein neues wissenschaftstheoretisches Prinzip einführen, sondern die Ansprüche insbesondere des Kritischen Rationalismus zurückweisen, Wissenschaft ausschließlich nach rationalen Regeln zu betreiben. Bürgerinitiativen sollten nach Feyerabend die Filter seien, um brauchbare von unbrauchbaren Ideen und Weltsichten zu trennen. Rational agents are supposed to maximize expected utility. But what are the options from which they choose? I outline some constraints on an adequate representation of an agent’s options. The options should, for example, contain no information of which the agent is unsure. But they should be sufficiently rich to distinguish all available acts from one another. These demands often come into conflict, so that there seems to be no adequate representation of the options at all. After reviewing existing proposals (...) for how to construe decision-theoretic options and finding them all wanting, I suggest that our model of rational agents should include a special domain of ‘virtual’ option propositions to serve as formal objects of deliberation and choice. The problem of free will has persistently resisted a solution throughout centuries. There is reason to believe that new elements need to be introduced into the analysis in order to make progress. In the present physicalist approach, these elements are emergence and information theory in relation to universal limits set by quantum physics. Furthermore the common, but vague, characterization of free will as "being able to act differently" is, in the spirit of Carnap, rephrased into an explicatum more suitable for (...) formal analysis. It is argued that the mind is an ontologically open system; a causal high-level system, the future of which cannot be reduced to the states of its associated low-level neural systems, not even if it is rendered physically closed. A positive answer to the question of free will is subsequently outlined. (shrink)

The mind-body problem is analyzed in a physicalist perspective. By combining the concepts of emergence and algorithmic information theory in a thought experiment employing a basic nonlinear process, it is argued that epistemically strongly emergent properties may develop in a physical system. A comparison with the significantly more complex neural network of the brain shows that also consciousness is epistemically emergent in a strong sense. Thus reductionist understanding of consciousness appears not possible; the mind-body problem does not have a reductionist (...) solution. The ontologically emergent character of consciousness is then identified from a combinatorial analysis relating to system limits set by quantum mechanics, implying that consciousness is fundamentally irreducible to low-level phenomena. In the perspective of a modified definition of free will, the character of the physical interactions of the brain's neural system is subsequently studied. As an ontologically open system, it is asserted that its future states are undeterminable in principle. We argue that this leads to freedom of the will. (shrink)

Vor diesem theoretischen Hintergrund, der in einem eigenen Kapitel näher umrissen wird, soll die Geschichte der Hermeneutik neu gelesen werden. Dabei wird deutlich, dass diese Lesart vielfach neue historische Interpretationen zu entwickeln und die wichtigsten Stationen der Geschichte der Hermeneutik theoretisch auf neue Weise zu integrieren vermag. Über die hermeneutischen Positionen hinaus, die in (...) den bisherigen Gesamtdarstellungen auftauchen, werden auch Entwürfe diskutiert, die besonders unter geist-theoretischen Aspekten interessant sind, zum Beispiel die antike Hermeneutik, die Hermeneutik Max Webers, die Hermeneutik der logischen Empiristen und die naturalistische Hermeneutik. This book has grown out of eight years of close collaboration among its authors. From the very beginning we decided that its content should come out as the result of a truly common effort. That is, we did not "distribute" parts of the text planned to each one of us. On the contrary, we made a point that each single paragraph be the product of a common reflection. Genuine team-work is not as usual in philosophy as it is in other (...) academic disciplines. We think, however, that this is more due to the idiosyncrasy of philosophers than to the nature of their subject. Close collaboration with positive results is as rewarding as anything can be, but it may also prove to be quite difficult to implement. In our case, part of the difficulties came from purely geographic separation. This caused unsuspected delays in coordinating the work. But more than this, as time passed, the accumulation of particular results and ideas outran our ability to fit them into an organic unity. Different styles of exposition, different ways of formalization, different levels of complexity were simultaneously present in a voluminous manuscript that had become completely unmanageable. In particular, a portion of the text had been conceived in the language of category theory and employed ideas of a rather abstract nature, while another part was expounded in the more conventional set-theoretic style, stressing intui tivity and concreteness. Magnetism in meta-semantics is the view that the meaning of our words is determined in part by their use and in part by the objective naturalness of candidate meanings. This hypothesis is commonly attributed to David Lewis, and has been put to philosophical work by Brian Weatherson, Ted Sider and others. I argue that there is no evidence that Lewis ever endorsed the view, and that his actual account of language reveals good reasons against it.

Our senses provide us with information about the world, but what exactly do they tell us? I argue that in order to optimally respond to sensory stimulations, an agent’s doxastic space may have an extra, “imaginary” dimension of possibility; perceptual experiences confer certainty on propositions in this dimension. To some extent, the resulting picture vindicates the old-fashioned empiricist idea that all empirical knowledge is based on a solid foundation of sense-datum propositions, but it avoids most of the problems traditionally associated (...) with that idea. The proposal might also explain why experiences appear to have a non-physical phenomenal character, even if the world is entirely physical. (shrink)
